ROTARY HEAD LOCKNUT TOOLS (SST), MAIN BEARING PE-LOAD
Item Number: 431759-MOD & 431759-INPUT

Figure 1: Locknut Tool (Left) and Input Tool (Right), showing part numbers on the respective labels.

Introduction

The purpose of this document is to provide information pertaining to the special service tool (SST) used to adjust the preload of the Rotary Head Main Bearings; offered by RiteDrill. The bearing preload must be checked and adjusted if necessary, every 500 hr service interval.

Below the bill of material showing the tool part numbers and description.

Table 1: Special Service Tool (SST) Bill of Material

431759?MOD – TOOL, LOCKNUT W/ LEFT HAND THREAD, BULL?SHAFT

431759?INPUT – TOOL, DRIVE, INPUT, ROTARY HEAD

 3/4in SQUARE DRIVE BREAKER BAR

3/4in TORQUE WRENCH

The 431759?MOD Locknut Tool has protrusions that are specifically designed to engage the kidney slots in the Locknut with left-hand thread (P/N: 0407162). The 431759?INPUT Input Drive Tool has a 13 Tooth SAE D Spline to engage the input shaft. Both tools feature 3/4in the square drive for integration with standard tooling commonly available. The Locknut and Input tools are shown in the above image. (Figure1)

Figure 2: Diagram showing overview of how to use tools on SKF rotary head.

1.0 Adjusting Preload with Tooling

The diagram above (Figure 2) shows how the Locknut and Input Shaft tools are used on the SKF rotary head. The principle is to utilise the gearbox’s own 16.04:1 reduction ratio to increase the torque at the Bullshaft in order to tighten the locknuts sufficiently. This in turn adjusts the preload on the main bearings. Refer to your service manual for the correct procedure to adjust the main bearing preload and for rotary head disassembly and torque tightening specifications.

Please note there is a MAJOR pinch point hazard between the reaction bar and the static/reaction beam see Figure 2. This is a result of the torque multiplier property of the gearbox. See section 1.1 WARNING POTENTIAL HAZARDS for a summary of this phenomenon.

1.2 Preload and Torque Turning

The locknut tool (431759?MOD) offered by RiteDrill features a viewing slot with the relevant angles engraved (0o, 5.625o, 11.25o) to simplify the torque turning process as outlined in the service book. Figure 1 shows the front view of the tool with the engraved angles and marking/viewing slot. It is recommended to make a temporary marking on the Bullshaft through the slot at 0o then tighten the nut until the mark is within the region between 5.625o and 11.25o. The fraction of a revolution (turn) to degrees conversion is shown in Table 2 below. Refer to your Service Manual for the approved procedure.

Figure 3: Locknut tool with marking/viewing slot and angles engraved. A 3/4in the square drive is at the top of the tool to allow integration with standard tooling available on site.
